Kenneth George McIntyre was deployed to Kiska and spoke of the first several days of that campaign as being cold, wet and sleeping in trenches filled with water. He joked about getting peaches from the Americans and bringing it back to the tent and being called a hero by his comrades who hadn't eaten well for days.

What a great site. My grandfather, RCAF, flying officer Robert W. Lynch, also fought it the Aleutian Islands from June 1942-1943, he was a fighter pilot with the 111F squadron. He used to go on bombing missions over Kiska. I have also created a site dedicated to the brave servicemen who fought up there in the sadly unknown campaign. It is my quest to spread the word and honor those that served.
I would love your family member to the In Memory page with your permission linking back to your site. Please visit the site Florida Beaches To The Bering Sea or email me, you can find my address on my site, for more details. I will not post until I have permission from the family members.

Links re Lavern Jarvis - Canada's Irish Regiment:
* http://pipesforfreedom.com/webtxt/0515THE_IRISH_REGIMENT_OF_CANADA.htm - at least a bit of of information there
*Also: "The Canadians in Italy 1943-45" Volume II of the Official History, by Lt. Col. G.W.L. Nicholson, Ottawa 1957 indicates The Irish Regiment of Canada, 11th Infantry Brigade under Brigadier S.J. Johnstone was in the UK, then on to Italy August 1944
*There is a museum re the IRC in Sudbury but knowing his Regimental Number would be most helpful if trying to research archives etc.
*http://www.godutch.com/newspaper/index.php?id=505#May 1945 - maybe start around March 28 but then go to May for IRC
*Anyone who knew Vern may have used his nickname of "Jeep" - maybe that will jog a memory or two.

I was forced to research Canadian WW2 heroes for my history class and I'm soo glad I came across this lovely site. These are two tremendous examples of simple men who have given their lives for us so solemnly. To lose a son to war must be so devestating and yet it seems as if they did it so earnestly. God Bless I will keep them in my heart and thoughts always.

Besides honouring your Heros, you have helped me understand some circumstances of my Uncle Raymond F Hull's death nearby on Feb 28 1945 age 24 Royal Canadian Artillery 2 Anti-Tank Regt Grave:IX. B. 13. Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery. The comment about the "soft ground" may point to why he was driving an Officer in a Jeep--perhaps looking for harder ground for their artillery, when Ray was shot dead by a sniper in a tree. Your site is a beautiful, meaningful memorial and they all will never be forgotten.

My prayers and appreciation go out to the men & women profiled on this site. I found it following seeing a documentary on the Hochwald Gap tank battle on Netflix.
I was born in Canada and it is nice to see and hear the stories of valor, sacrifice, and pride Canadians exemplified in the Second World War.
Seeing the young faces that fought so hard against a more than formidable enemy gives me pause.
In Christ,
Luc

I am an hard working wikipedia author with almost 10.000 edits per year. After having read canadianheroes.org, I wrote the article
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Blackcock
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlacht_am_Kapelsche_Veer
(based on nl.wikipedia.org) and some other articles and made many links from wikipedia articles to canadianheroes.org
And I lighted a candle after having visited the Polderhuis-Museum in Westkapelle - for Henri, Loren and all the many others.
My compliments to canadianheroes.org !

I would like to find out what happened to Minnie Berg, who lived in Leeuwarden, during 1945 and early 1946. She knew my father, Fred Dearden, a soldier in the medical corps of the army. If anyone else who knew my father would like to contact me that would be appreciated.

on this website, I saw that the LAKE SUPERIOR REGIMENT (M) is listed with the 10th Inf. Brigade of the 4th.Can. Armoured Division. Some other sources indicate the LSR (M) belonged to the 4th Armoured Brigade of that 4th. Division.
What is correct I wonder? ... a relative of ours was a soldier in the LSR (M) and fell in Flanders in 1944.
Nice website anyway!

Thank you for this website and way for us to connect. I am writing a play about the individuals who took part in and were affected by the Battle at Kapelsche Veer. My primary source is a box of letters written by Sgt. Bob Henson of Lincoln and Welland's C company. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him or who had personal recollections (Canadian, German, Norwegian, dutch resistance or civilian) of that battle. (My thanks to Henry Gow, Bill Leslie and Junior Dunlop who provided info a few years ago.) Thanks for taking the time!

In May 2004 I found myself wandering through the rows of the cemetery at Bretteville-sur-Laize. Of the thousands of markers there, one particular grave caught my attention. This grave was different than all of the others because at the base of the headstone was placed a photograph of a young soldier and a maple leaf pin. As you might expect, this was the grave of Henri Richard. For years I've wondered who he was, but mostly I’ve wondered who, after over 60 years has been keeping his memory alive. This year, as we approach Remembrance Day I decided to investigate further, which has brought me to this site (amongst others).
What a fitting tribute.
