They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them... on 11/11,at 11am silence!!!!
My dad Roger Brunel was one of the soldiers sent to Kiska during WW2. It was very interesting reading about it all on this website. Thank You. My dad used to tell us stories when he was sent to Kiska and how lucky they were to arrive there and the Japanese had left. I too am very thankful as I might not be here today..!

Was Henri Richard's mother Élisabeth Barras?
If so, Élisabeth was born in France and her father immigrated in 1904.

I will write an article on my blog about Henri Richard. I have trace back his ancestors to Cap-St-Ignace in Quebec.
Your site does honour to him and those brave soldiers.

Looking for anyone who might have served with my grandfather Thomas Neal Quinn (from Sarnia,Ont) during WW2. He joined the RCNR in July 1943 at the age of 17. He was part of the crew of the landing craft LCI L 299 of the 262nd Flotilla on Juno Beach during Dday. Would love to see some stories or pictures of him so that I may pass this on to my children. Anything would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I came here to the site again today, on the anniversary of D-Day, what an endeavour that was, although Loren and Henri were still both in Canada on June 6th 1944. They too were soon in the thick of it and in time gave thier lives.
Thanks for this site Mark, We will Remember them.

Great site...Was researching my fathers exploits during his Tour of Europe as a Cameron Highlander and my Father in-law who was a tanker with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers. How strange that my wife and I met with fathers who had served in the same division.
Outstanding work
Thank you kindly

Good job with the site, a fine memorial to all of the young people who died to give my generation freedom.
My Uncle is also buried in Holten. A rear gunner on Lancaster’s he was killed on the last mission of his tour with number IV squadron RAF Sept. 23/24th 1944. His pervious mission had been operation Parvane the attack on the Tirpitz. The surviving crew member was hidden by a Dutch family and liberated by the Canadian troops. My father who also served in the RAF, was Joes twin brother and was always comforted by the gratitude of the Dutch people. If anyone has any knowledge of where my uncle Leslie Joesph Hambly is buried in Holten or knows anything about the crash of his aircraft I would be pleased to hear from them.
Thank you,
Gary Hambly

Thank for your excellent site. My grandfather, Thomas Pow Watson, was a member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers and stationed on Kiska for 18 months. Finding information on this has been challenging.
However, for anyone interested in finding out about the Alaska campaign there is a new book, Alaska at War, 1941 – 1945 by Fern Chandonnet, published by The University of Alaska Press, 2007. The book is excellent. It is a collection of articles that cover the politics behind and the forming of a joint US Canadian force, the Japanese point of view and their evacuation, the retaking of Attu and Kiska, underwater archaeology (a Japanese mini-sub in Kiska harbor) and a variety of other topics. Much of the book is available, as a book preview, on-line. Searching the title should give you a link to it. I do, however, recommend getting the book. My local library was able to bring one in for me on inter-library loan.
An interesting fact is that when the Canadians first started to arrive at Adak they had problems with US customs. The US Customs Department wanted to charge the Canadians duty on their supplies and equipment. US Secretary of State, Cordell Hull, solved the problem up designating the Canadian troops as “distinguished foreign visitors” giving the duty free status.

I am assuming that you have checked the Veterans Affairs Canada Website - The Canadian Virtual War Memorial. You will see a reference there to your late uncle. It gives his service number, date of death and his burial place Grosbeek Canadian War Cemetary and the names of his parents. His service number is B18191 and he served with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. He is commemorated in the Book of Remembrance - Page 538.
From this information I think that you would be able to make a request under the Access to Information Act for additional biographical details via the National Archives in Ottawa.
Hope this helps.

I was a baby in Assen, Netherlands when the Canadian Army liberated us. We housed Canadian soldiers until they returned. We always wondered what happened to them. My parents wrote them a few times, but over time, and with immigration to US, contact was lost. Believe me, the Dutch have great appreciation for the Canadian Army and other allied units attached.

Mark,
Thanks again for this site, I was looking at my binder of family history documents today and I noticed that it's been over 10 years since you started your work on this site (and almost 20 years since I obtained the war service records for our uncles Loren and Henri.)And if you consider how many people that you have touched with this site I know our uncles would be proud.

As we commemorate another Remembrance Day here in Canada, let us never forget those that did not get a chance to live their lives to the fullest. They gave their lives so that we could enjoy so much more in our lives. We should never forget them.
They are all Canadian heroes to me.
