I've been at the cemetry in Holten this weekend. It is still to diffucult to say in words what your soldiers have done for us. With tears in my eyes, i saw their graves. May we remeber them for ever.

I came here to the site again today, on the anniversary of D-Day, what an endeavour that was, although Loren and Henri were still both in Canada on June 6th 1944. They too were soon in the thick of it and in time gave thier lives.
Thanks for this site Mark, We will Remember them.

Great site...Was researching my fathers exploits during his Tour of Europe as a Cameron Highlander and my Father in-law who was a tanker with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers. How strange that my wife and I met with fathers who had served in the same division.
Outstanding work
Thank you kindly

Good job with the site, a fine memorial to all of the young people who died to give my generation freedom.
My Uncle is also buried in Holten. A rear gunner on Lancaster’s he was killed on the last mission of his tour with number IV squadron RAF Sept. 23/24th 1944. His pervious mission had been operation Parvane the attack on the Tirpitz. The surviving crew member was hidden by a Dutch family and liberated by the Canadian troops. My father who also served in the RAF, was Joes twin brother and was always comforted by the gratitude of the Dutch people. If anyone has any knowledge of where my uncle Leslie Joesph Hambly is buried in Holten or knows anything about the crash of his aircraft I would be pleased to hear from them.
Thank you,
Gary Hambly

Thank for your excellent site. My grandfather, Thomas Pow Watson, was a member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers and stationed on Kiska for 18 months. Finding information on this has been challenging.
However, for anyone interested in finding out about the Alaska campaign there is a new book, Alaska at War, 1941 – 1945 by Fern Chandonnet, published by The University of Alaska Press, 2007. The book is excellent. It is a collection of articles that cover the politics behind and the forming of a joint US Canadian force, the Japanese point of view and their evacuation, the retaking of Attu and Kiska, underwater archaeology (a Japanese mini-sub in Kiska harbor) and a variety of other topics. Much of the book is available, as a book preview, on-line. Searching the title should give you a link to it. I do, however, recommend getting the book. My local library was able to bring one in for me on inter-library loan.
An interesting fact is that when the Canadians first started to arrive at Adak they had problems with US customs. The US Customs Department wanted to charge the Canadians duty on their supplies and equipment. US Secretary of State, Cordell Hull, solved the problem up designating the Canadian troops as “distinguished foreign visitors” giving the duty free status.

I was a baby in Assen, Netherlands when the Canadian Army liberated us. We housed Canadian soldiers until they returned. We always wondered what happened to them. My parents wrote them a few times, but over time, and with immigration to US, contact was lost. Believe me, the Dutch have great appreciation for the Canadian Army and other allied units attached.

Mark,
Thanks again for this site, I was looking at my binder of family history documents today and I noticed that it's been over 10 years since you started your work on this site (and almost 20 years since I obtained the war service records for our uncles Loren and Henri.)And if you consider how many people that you have touched with this site I know our uncles would be proud.
Roger

As we commemorate another Remembrance Day here in Canada, let us never forget those that did not get a chance to live their lives to the fullest. They gave their lives so that we could enjoy so much more in our lives. We should never forget them.
They are all Canadian heroes to me.

What a touching and lasting tribute to your family hero's. I have visited this site many times, and consider it one of best sites on the web. Since my first visit here, I have invested thousands of hours in research to reconstruct the war records of my family as well. You were such an encouragement.
My Uncle Lance Corporal Norman Sullivan was a tank commander with the Governor General Foot Guards (GGFG), 21st armoured division in the 4th brigade. His tank was the last tank shelled with the crew instantly killed, in Germany on April 28th in the GGFG. They supported the Linc's throughout the war. Having read both the GGFG and the Lincoln & Welland Regimental History books, after my interest being so peeked by your stories, the books gave me such a wealth of information. Thanks again for this wonderful site.
